We will take in your unwanted dogs in IL Illinois.  If you have a pet who you no longer have time for or cannot house anymore, Please call us.  Most of the pets listed in classified ads are there because of reasons like this and since there are so many, it is very hard to sell yours.  Besides their being so many listed, nobody wants to buy a dog more than six months old that has already developed bad habits.  Since this is the case, most sellers get discouraged and end up giving it away or donating it to an adoption organization.  Needless to say, the latter is the better option for the welfare of the animal.  If you give it to the welfare society, they will probably end up euthanizing it.  Please don't do that!

Here is what happens when you sell or give it away:  The new owner eventually becomes frustrated, runs out of patience, no longer has the time for it and gives up (or they simply weren't a pre-approved good owner).  Since they live many years it just keeps getting passed around.  The stress caused by the constant moves is hard on it and hard on the new owners.  Some become sick and some show their stress in other ways such as becoming mean, urinating everywhere or disobeying.

On the other hand you could donate your old friend to the local rescue.  Here is what happens when you do that:  Have you ever gone to one?  You see the same animals over and over again (unless they euthanize which is worse).  They usually don't get placed because no one wants someone else's problem.  Most people want a new puppy of their own to train and bond with.  Again this is why many of them develop problems even if they were perfect to begin with.  For this reason, the rescues become overstocked.  Since they are usually non-for-profit organizations, they cannot afford to be overstocked and the workers homes are already filled with the ones they kept for themselves.  In order to place it, you must advertise it and most of these organizations do not have an advertizing budget.

If you answer a classified ad that says, "I will take your unwanted pets", or "I am looking for something for myself but I don't have any money", the recipient is just a scammer looking to amass free pets to resell for a profit to whoever will give him a few bucks for it.  This is bad, because the reseller does not care at all about them and certainly doesn't care who ends up buying them.  This is much worse than giving it away to an adoption agency.  This problem is so prolific that most classified websites are starting to ban people from placing ads like that.

Here is where we come in.  Of course your donations are welcome but they are not necessary.  Chances are that you are reading this because you have already been trying to get what you thought was a reasonable amount of money and you are now realizing why we call them "unwanted".  Nobody is willing to pay for them.  If they are willing to pay, they want a cute new baby that they can hand raise themselves.  Have you tried giving it away?  If you can find somebody you trust and know will take care of your loved one, that would be the best option, but most times even your friends and neighbors will turn down your generous offer.

If we take in your unwanted pet, will we charge and adoption fee?  Hopefully!!  But not after we put a lot of love, care and money into it to place it.  We have spent thousands of dollars trying to help problem pets to become wanted and loved family pets.  So if you think that we are going to take your loved one and sell it for profit, consider the months of labor it will take (yes we do pay our employees).  The food it will consume alone will probably be more than our adoption fees.

By the way, non-for profit organizations do charge for the animal that they got for free but even if they charged $1000 for it (of course no one would ever pay that much for a rescued puppy), they would still not recover all of the expenses involved with rescuing.  There are a lot of vet costs.  Every new arrival taken in has to be vet checked.  Many of them are treated preventatively even if they seem healthy just so they don't contaminate the rest of the population.  All new arrivals have to be quarantined which takes up more space and resources.  Volunteers are always appreciated but most people want to get paid for their efforts.  And if it has medical issues, it can bankrupt you.  Sorry, I had to interject this little rant, back to the subject at hand.

We are also very selective as to whom we place our rescued puppies with.  We don't market the animals in any old classified ad where someone who cannot afford to give it the proper care is likely to see the ad and think they are going to score a cheap pet.  We routinely place our adopted pets in ritzy neighborhoods like Highland Park, Burr Ridge etc.  They go from being passed around from home to home and getting stressed over it, to living in the lap of luxury with all kinds of toys and attention from their new loving and caring owners.  Let me tell you, these new owners were not shopping at a typical rescue.  They too wanted a healthy, happy, cute baby, but when presented with the quality rescues we have to offer, they were persuaded to do the right thing and help an animal in need.

With all the costs of the rehabilitation, food and housing as well as placement and advertising, unfortunately, it does not leave any profit in the end.  This is definitely a labor of love rather than a profitable business.  If we could place them for free we would and if you would like to make a donation or volunteer your time that would be greatly appreciated.

This is a win, win situation for everybody.  You are frustrated at this point and would probably give it away for free if you knew it would go to a good home.

-It will benefit from all of the loving, caring and attention it will get from us and will eventually end up in a wonderful new permanent home.

-It's new family will be happy that they did not have to pay an arm and a leg to get a wonderful new addition to their family.

Hopefully maybe someday we can break even for our efforts but if we don't, at least we know we did the best thing for the animals.

Please do the right thing for your loved one and don't try to just get a few bucks by selling out your friend's future.  Think about it, anybody shopping around for the cheapest price on a used pet in a classified ad is probably not going to be the one to give your old friend the best life they deserve, are they?  We can help you.  Call Now!

Chicago Dog Shelter is not considered by the government to be a non-for-profit organization.  This is because it is ran by the Chicago Puppy Store which is a for profit specialty pet shop.  We have strong feelings for the dogs we sell and we never want any harm to come them.  This is the reason we started this rescue shelter.  Unlike most rescues that are struggling to survive and cannot afford to give the best care to the rescued animals, the Chicago puppy Store uses profits from the sales of new puppies to help the rescued ones.

Most animal rights activists believe that there is an overpopulation of dogs and that breeders should stop breeding and people should stop buying new ones and save all of the shelter dogs.  Not only is this a very idealistic attitude, it is slightly incorrect.  The fact is that most buyers want a cute fuzzy new baby and not somebody's old problem.  This is so true that the breeders can't even come up with enough puppies to supply the demand of the public.  So while the shelters may be overcrowded with rescues, the state of the nation is not necessarily overpopulated with dogs.  The answer is to find the right balance and that is what we try to do.  Most new puppy buyers are not going to allow themselves to be talked into taking an older dog and they should be able to get what they want!  On the other hand a small few more compassionate earth friendly types will not be hard to persuade into helping the cause by taking in a rescued dog instead.  We encourage all of our buyers to be responsible owners and do the right thing but if something comes up and they can no longer keep it, we will always take it back rather than the alternative.  We even take in ones that we did not originally sell.  We definitely go over and above the call of duty to keep the balance.  Since the shelter is part of the store even people who would not have originally considered adopting, are being exposed to the rescues and the chance at saving a life.
